Life Stories: A 40-Day Devotional on Madeleine L'Engle's A Circle of Quiet
The Bible is brimming with stories of struggle, pain, joy, and wonder – just like the stories of our lives.

In this 40-day devotional – perfect for the season of Lent, or any other seven-week span – we set out on a pilgrimage with Madeleine L’Engle as our guide, exploring biblical stories alongside passages from her classic memoir, A Circle of Quiet.
Created in collaboration with the stewards of L’Engle’s legacy, this resource invites us to follow her lead, retelling the stories of our lives as we take stock of how far we’ve come, reconnect with where we are, and turn the page toward the future, catching sight of what God is calling us to do next.
L’Engle is the author of the beloved A Wrinkle in Time – and also a celebrated poet, playwright, and memoirist, winner of the Newbery Medal and a National Humanities Medal, and one of most imaginative, engaging Christian writers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
“Life Stories: A 40-Day Devotional on Madeleine L’Engle’s A Circle of Quiet” comes complete with biblical passages, reflections, writing prompts, activities, and extended excerpts from A Circle of Quiet printed directly into the devotional.

The scriptural passages in this devotional correspond to Year A in the Revised Common Lectionary during Lent – but since their themes are universal, this devotional can be used fruitfully during any Lenten season, or indeed during any seven-week span, any time of year.

Into The Wild: A Family-Friendly Devotional on Henri Matisse and the Season of Lent
The Season of Lent is a walk into the wild, a 40-day adventure filled with wild beasts, wild love, beauties, challenges, visions – and bold, bright colors.

In this family-friendly Lenten devotional full of Scripture, art, and activities, we take this adventure with Henri Matisse, one of the most daring and beloved artists in modern history. From his childhood in northern France to what he called his “masterpiece,” the Chapel of the Rosary in Vence, Matisse explored faith and wildness throughout his life.

He once said he liked to pray with a pencil: “At the moment I go every morning to say my prayers, pencil in hand; I stand in front of a pomegranate tree covered in blossom, each flower at a different stage, and I watch their transformation… filled with admiration for the work of God. Is this not a way of praying?”

So grab a pencil (or a crayon, or a paintbrush!), your favorite Bible, and a decent internet connection (all the paintings referenced here can be found online; each purchase comes with a companion “Link Sheet” pdf for guidance). Week by week, with the words of Scripture and the art of Henri Matisse as our guides, we’ll head into the wild – all the way to the beautiful, joyful love of Easter morning.

Podcast: Strange New World
A six-episode podcast from 2023 - Jesus, Wendell, and Henri
In the first episode, explore how Wendell Berry’s practice of Sabbath walking (and writing) and Henri Matisse’s approach to “realism” can shed light on Matthew’s famous story of Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness.

“Strange New World,” a show about understanding the Bible, the world’s most influential, misunderstood book — a podcast tailor-made for skeptics, believers, and everybody in between.
Hosted by SALT’s own Matthew Myer Boulton, who’s spent twenty years teaching the Bible and theology to students at Harvard Divinity School and seminaries in New England and the Midwest, “Strange New World” will take a fresh look at the world’s bestselling book of all time, the ancient community library we call “the Bible.”

The show’s title, “Strange New World,” is borrowed from an essay written by a Swiss theologian a hundred years ago, in which he wrote of “the strange new world within the Bible,” a world so ancient, so different, so familiar, so strange that it presses us to think new thoughts from new points of view, “to dare and to reach,” and ultimately “to grow out beyond ourselves.”
